On Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18, 10 CMS 8th graders and 7 from Meadow traveled to Black Mountain to the YMCA Blue Ridge Conference Center for the Middle School Model United Nations Conference. Led by UN teachers, Sharon McAdam and Rhonda Langston, the students participated in mock committee meetings debating issues they worked on in class. They also divided into different countries in a General Assembly to debate and vote on resolutions developed in the committees. Students enjoyed a Festival of Nations, learning about all the countries in the United Nations, trying food from the regions, and seeing others dressed in native attire. One group, Argentina, won an award for the information they presented at the festival. The group consisted of Aiyana Woldu, Valery Berrios, Elana Hardesty, and Karlee Baguio. Darius Bennett, representing Fiji, won an award for his debate/speaking skills during committee meetings. All students worked hard during the UN class to make the weekend a success.
