Mercer Conducts All-District

Rebecka Mercer, CMS Band Director, was selected to be the director for the All-District Band February 17-18, 2017 at Scotland High School in Laurinburg. Mrs. Mercer says she was very surprised when she was selected. She replied, “We have a lot of good band directors in our district, and I was shocked when they wanted me!” She alternated between being nervous and excited. Mrs.Mercer explained that the most stressful part was choosing the music for the performers to play. “I wanted to make sure that I picked music that wasn’t too easy and wasn’t too hard. I also wanted the students to enjoy the music that they were going to play.” Four Clayton Middle students participated in All-District as well. Mrs.Mercer said that it was fun to experience All-District with them. “It’s different  than teaching them in their regular class because there are more than 90 kids rehearsing together. I enjoy watching them be apart of something bigger than they are use to.” You would think that two days is not enough rehearsal time but Mrs. Mercer explained. “We had about 9 hours to practice before the concert. Also,  the students received the copies of the music the day of the audition so they had about 5 weeks to practice the music before their first rehearsal. I think we had enough time, but if we had more time I could have selected harder music.” Congratulations again, Mrs. Mercer and all of the students who performed.
